SP: Congratulations to the sugarchair. It looks amazing.
Pieter Brenner: Thanks, but watch out, I am coming up with some fresh ideas in the future. I will destroy some conventions, borders and opinions with my next projects. I have a vision!
SP: What vision?
Pieter Brenner: I have lived in haze untill now. The last years of my work have been useless. Now that a can see clearly, one can see the clearity in my design.
SP: We are thrilled about your future, but tell us a bit about the sugarchair...
Pieter Brenner: I wanted to create a space in which the consumer himself can be creative. I wanted to show, that we still are able to play. Many people lost their creativity on their way to grow up, its as simple as that. Keep in mind, that we are here in this world for only a few years. Lets fucking start playing today...
SP: For whom did you make the chair?
Pieter Brenner: First of all I made it for myself. Second: to help people distinguish themselves. The globalisation and the media wants to make everybody equal, even men and women. But that does not work. I design for the interesting few that can afford it, because only they will understand my designs. I think it´s useless to democratizise design.
SP: Why did you make the chair out of sugar?
Pieter Brenner: Well, consume and raw material is connected globally. Sugar is the symbol of capitalism. Why the hell are your Jeans not made out of sugar?
SP: Well, it is also adesigner Jeans. Do you consider yourself as a designer?
Everytime these questions about design. If I say that I am a designer, I am a designer, but I do not need to study design. Call me whatever you want, it does not bother me...
SP: Does that mean you learned all your skills by yourself, and have not studied design?
Pieter Brenner: I don´t like the life of the petit bourgeois.
SP: What impact did the time in Amsterdam have towards you work?
Pieter Brenner: I love Amsterdam, its culture showed me how to be free in mind. I can´t follow the rules of greyness in the design business. If you own one of my creations, I want everybody to recognize this as beeing a real Pieter Brenner immediatly.
SP: What made you come so far?
Pieter Brenner. One day I woke up and it was all clear. I had myself a night before...
SP: When was your last dental visit?
Pieter Brenner: "Every time he calls me (laughs). I really should go again, my dining room is very important..."
SP: Will they still create a table or maybe even a whole room? What are your plans for the future?
Pieter Brenner: You can lick the back of my chair, then you have a table. A few people have already asked me to design their homes with sugar. But i already have designes a guitar out of bones for an Arab sheik.
SP: Is the consumer also the designer by designing his own form?
Pieter Brenner: If you go into a store and eat a piece of chocolate and think you have designed this piece, you are wrong. But if you lick my chair in your personal form, then you are the new designer and I have given my job to you. That´s my goal...
SP: What makes Pieter Brenner in his spare time?
Pieter Brenner: There is to much design in my head. I just can not help, but I am constantly working on spreading the idea of design in this world.
SP: An new idea of design?
Pieter Brenner: "Yes, a vision. Design is always right, design is the past, design is the future. We as designers have an impact and we can save the world. We just have to follow the rules of design.
SP: Are you environmentally conscious?
Pieter Brenner: Of course. You can recycle the whole chair.
SP: Thank you for the interview.
